Breast Reduction Q & A

How is the procedure performed?
Breast reduction surgery/reduction mammaplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are usually around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease (short scar/lollipop incision). After the incision is made, the nipple (which remains attached to its original blood and nerve supply) is then repositioned. Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. Occasionally, for extremely large pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast (free nipple graft).

The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape close the skin. Some incision lines resulting from breast reduction are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, others are visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time.

What is the Recovery time?
Recovery time after Breast Reduction varies per patient, however best to say 1-3 weeks. Following Breast Reduction, our nursing staff will care you for until you’re well enough to go home. We provide post-care instructions so you’re confident in how to care for your incisions, when and how to take proper pain medication, and the limitations in your daily activities. You will have a support garment to aid in swelling and discomfort. We monitor your recovery progress with scheduled post-op appointments. Many patients find the recovery very tolerable and feel their lives return to normal in just a week or two.
